How can a telecoms company afford to give them away for free ... what's the catch?????

Certain types of 0844 Numbers are frequently given away for free by many telecoms providers, but how can this be possible? Surely no business would willingly give a product away for free if they are not making some kind of turn over from it. Well that is exactly it; telecoms providers DO make money from 0844 numbers even if they give them away for nothing.

Call Charges

The answer is in the charges people pay to call the number ... when somebody calls a 0844 number they will be charged around 5p per minute and approximately 2p of that will go to the number provider. So even if they sell hundreds of 0844 numbers for free, as long as people are calling those numbers they will be making money (The person buying the 0844 number will also receive a percentage of the call charges too).
